"Accabadora” EP Review

Carrie Bergen

If you haven’t heard of Poolside at the Flamingo, well then buckle up because they are not for the faint of heart. They are not here to float around on a flamingo inflatable drinking piña coladas. Poolside at the Flamingo is not an average day by the pool in the sun. It is not meant to be an easy breezy day in the Bahamas or something. It’s more, wake up, CANNONBALL into that pool and make the biggest wave possible more kind of vibe.  The band is based in Colorado and formed in 2005. They currently have three albums and a single out on streaming platforms. The band is a four-piece and consists of Scotty Bohnen (vocals), Danny Bohnen (guitar), Rudy Garcia (drums), and David French (bass).

The band just released a new EP titled, “Accabadora” which is inspired as an homage to The Lady of Good Death from Sardinian Folklore. This EP, similar to some of their past discography is made up of heavy vocals with a complexity of guitar riffs which makes up their main overall sound.

Some releases describe them as an “obnoxiously heavy grindcore” band which is MOSTLY accurate. Obnoxious is an interesting word to use considering this particular genre is meant to be all up in your face loud. Now obviously if this isn’t your cup of tea, you would think that. But the big part that really stands out for bands in this genre (in my opinion) is the bass. The pounding and the fact that you can physically feel every single part of the song is the experience. It’s part of it and for the ones that enjoy it can probably agree with that.

This new EP consists of four tracks and three of them were released early before the official release date which was May 22. The band’s favorite song is “Hell on Earth” but personally the titular track, “Accabadora” stood out the most. The opening punches you in the face with the vocals, guitar, bass, and drum all in one go. The drumming at the beginning is so intense and the gruff growls paired, you can feel that bass even just at home listening on a device. Then each track, while similarly sounding, all different. The transitions from one song to the next blends so seamlessly and then you're smacked in the face with the vocals and bass lines. It’s brutal. It’s deathcore. For those unfamiliar, it’s probably not what you think a band named Poolside at the Flamingo would sound like.

In a recent interview, the band has said that this EP is definitely what they are most proud of and the overall sound they are looking to achieve together. It is a perfect blend of “erratic grindcore and soul-crushing breakdowns” and yes, it is indeed full of breakdowns which one can only imagine what it’ll be like live. If you need a new angry band to just scream, headbang, and enjoy a breakdown that’ll maybe cause a heart attack, this EP is for you. So definitely give it a listen and enjoy.

And if you want to try to catch them live, they just started a mini tour this past week and you can catch them next on June 10th at the Mesa Theatre (Grand Junction, Colorado) or the 28th at The Roxy Theatre (Denver, Colorado). Otherwise go give them a follow on social media to see where you can catch them next. With the release of this new album and concert season hitting its stride for the summer, you can probably expect to see more shows being announced.
