Eivør’s Music Transcends Language: A Spellbinding Performance in NYC
BY MICHELLE SALGADO
The Faroe Islands, while known for their otherworldly beauty, are not widely recognized for their music scene—but Eivør is changing that. She has the rare ability to captivate an audience from the moment she steps on stage. Her music blends the haunting qualities of Faroese folk traditions with the weight of heavy guitars and electronic beats, creating a sound that feels both ancient and modern. There’s a ritualistic energy to her shows that’s completely engrossing, and Saturday’s concert at the Music Hall of Williamsburg was no exception to that.
Starting the show strong with four songs off her latest album, she then dove into one of my favorites — "Let It Come,” a heavy, almost sensual, rock-pop ballad that had everyone singing along. Eivør’s music transcends language, though, with fans singing along to songs like “Trøllabundin” and, my personal favorite, “Í Tokuni” in Faroese. It’s easy to get swept away by her music, especially when she switches between her signature guitar riffs and her custom-crafted handheld drum. The shift between these instruments and the electronic synths from her backing band adds to the ritualistic quality of her performance.
An Eivør concert is a unique experience that surpasses any expectations you might have. Her musical talent combined with her haunting, otherworldly vocals, creates something truly one of a kind, something that needs to be seen to be believed. She has an unparalleled ability to transport her audience to another world, making her live performance an unforgettable journey that lingers long after she leaves the stage.
