Frances Forever Gives Me Lockjaw Tour

BY JULIETTE GONGORA

What a joy it is to spend an evening attending a Frances Forever show. The singer-songwriter graced the Baby’s All Right stage with their space-themed get-up, bringing all the aliens down to Earth. Throughout the Lockjaw Tour, Frances requested everyone dress up according to their specific city’s theme, New York City being “space girl” themed! Frances Forever and their band dawned space suits with sparkly, starry eye makeup. From this alone, the audience knew it was about to be an unforgettable evening.

The show proved to be an explosion of fun, resembling a slumber party I never had though I always wished I would. The setlist was full of their upbeat hits, along with some slower, more intimate songs including “Too Soft”, “Nobody’s Daughter”, and “Jupiter”. On the song “Frankenstein” Frances asked us to take a moment to sit down and be present with the people around us. This moment was truly such a special part of the set, and it was a beautiful thing to witness. Frances Forever brought up one of the openers of the night, Grace Gardner, to join them on the song “Baby Bangs”-- making for a beautiful rendition of one of my personal favorites.

The tight knit friendship between the musicians spilled into the crowd, bringing an energy you don’t often see on stage. This band of BFFs became something like chosen family, if not for the audience, definitely for themselves. Frances Forever expressed their desire for these shows to be a safe queer space for everyone in the room. With this acknowledgment, it was clear how caring and gentle Frances is with the energy created at their shows. Bringing everyone in the room together to shout the lyrics to their very gay, very fun songs!

Closing out the night with, of course, their viral song and the night’s theme was “Space Girl”. This song is accompanied by a dance in the chorus, and an enthusiastic sing-along portion which everyone made sure to scream the lyrics to. Leaving the venue, it seemed as though we all had made a new friend, even if that just meant loving ourselves a little more.
