Frank Carter x Sex Pistols in London

BY BETH PHASEY-MANCLARK

On August 15th, 2024, modern punk legend - Frank Carter (of Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes) took to the stage at Bush Hall, alongside acclaimed punk rock heroes, and original Sex Pistols members - Glen Matlock, Paul Cook, and Steve Jones - to perform the finale of three sold-out charity gigs. This special trio of shows was arranged with the intention of fundraising for the iconic venue, which is sadly being threatened with closure. Each night fans got to witness Frank Carter collaborating with Sex Pistols to deliver a kinetic live rendition of their 1977 album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols - which isn’t too far from turning 50!

Wide-eyed, prodigiously-tatted, and saturated in sweat - the second he stepped foot on the stage, Carter delivered a fantastically feral show, giving 100% energy, 100% of the time. Unafraid of jumping straight into things, Carter barely made it through one song before taking the leap and entrusting himself to float on the ocean of decorated arms. The crowd maneuvered Carter from one side of the venue to the other, as chaos and human whirlpools instilled around him. Carter had big shoes to fill and had to find his place within a band that has a chemistry and history that dates back decades. He managed to do this with ease, whilst bringing his own elements to the group dynamic, which blended splendidly with Sex Pistols’ renowned spirit and sound.

Those who were lucky enough to grab tickets to these shows were able to witness history - getting to see original members of one of the most influential rock bands of all time come together for the first time in decades to perform their album in its entirety. And, getting to see legends, Cook, Matlock, and Jones work their magic in such close proximity at such an intimate venue, with only 400 capacity! There was certainly a cozy and communal feeling that could be found amongst the chaos. People of all ages coming together to share a love of music, a love of culture, and a love of Sex Pistols. The band sounded as good as ever and delivered instrumental output that sounded identical to hit tracks from their widely celebrated, and one and only album. From mosh pits to mohawks, this night evidenced that punk rock culture is still very much alive.

This isn’t the last we’ll see of Sex Pistols just yet. Due to popular demand, Frank Carter and Sex Pistols will be taking the stage for a newly added, and already sold-out, show at O2 Forum Kentish Town on September 26th.
