“Hieroglyphics” Review

BY CARRIE BERGAN

The Reveal are a three-piece band from Nashville and their newest album tiled Hieroglyphics dropped TODAY! In the press release they discusses their ability to combine blues with funky riffs and a psychedelic feel. Without even reading that description, I can hear it. The first track opens with guitar riffs and a sort of haunting melody before launching into lyrics. With a twangy sound and gruffness, his voice lends so well to the overall sound. I was hooked from the first track.

I think the second track is especially fun. From the rhythmic opening to the chant-like chorus of the song name, it’s catchy; it’s on a beat that pairs well. It’s named “Rally the Troops” and the backing vocals of repeating, ‘rally the troops’ gives the feeling of marching into war and how the size of the people in this “troop” is growing in size from the crescendo because we are RALLYing THE TROOPS! (I almost think that this would have been a better first track on the album with that.)

Of course, I can’t forget the drummer - without the drummer there is no beat. The drummer keeps the time and they’ve done such a good job from bringing in the loud beats but also, when needed, softer sounds that gradually build life towards the choruses.

Just when you think the music can’t get anymore catchy, you reach “Mama Don’t Know (Gypsy Lady)”. This track has more of a hip-hop-meets-rock vibe and I truly don’t know how I never heard of this band before. I might be having this song stuck in my head for a bit. I don’t know, we’ll see.

The title track to the album - “Hieroglyphics”. The opening is almost space-like. It has an electric feel. It’s different. But, it still builds into their psychedelic sound.

My resting, I’m vibing. It’s definitely different from my standard music taste which is almost exclusively pop punk but like their title track says, “I still like the vibe.” Their vibes are funky and pulses through your core with every song. It all flows from start to finish in each track.

I don’t know if there are plans for a tour, but you bet I’d want to be there. I think it’ll be a fun show full of high energy and bass beats that you would feel in your bones. (I personally love being able to feel the music shake my insides.) It adds to the experience, a raw connection between the artist and their art.
