Slapstick Comedy or a Rock Show? Lime Cordiale Blurs the Line at Brooklyn Steel
BY ALYSSA GOLDBERG
Lime Cordiale can’t keep their hands off New York City.
After headlining the Music Hall of Williamsburg in March of 2023 and Irving Plaza in July of 2022, Lime Cordiale came to Brooklyn Steel last Thursday for round three — and somehow, their gigs keep getting better.
The Aussie surf-rock duo, composed of brothers Oliver and Louis Leimbach, are wild animals onstage –– teetering between shredding guitars and breaking into stunt sequences. In a strobe-light-infused dance break, a referee joined the stage to enforce the rules of a wrestling match between the pair. Dressed in wrestling robes, Oliver spanked Louis across the stage, and Louis did a cartwheel back to center, resting in Oliver’s arms midway. Back on solid ground, the pair threw stunt punches at each other.
The bit was completely irrelevant to their music –– yet far from pointless. Rather, it just showed the extent of outlandish tactics the duo will use to put on a good show. Entertainers at heart, Lime Cordiale knows how to have fun, while making sure their fans have the lime of their lives as well. It’s impossible not to dance a little harder, scream a little louder, and smile a little wider amid both lighthearted ridiculousness and invigorating pop-rock music.
Before performing their “triple J Like a Version” cover of “I Touch Myself,” they teased a hardcore fan who they met before the show, saying “this one was for him.” They closed the night with “Waking Up Easy,” “Robbery,” and “Inappropriate Behaviour,” encouraging fans to dance through the end.
As for when Lime Cordiale will return to NYC? We have a feeling it won’t be long. In the meantime, they’ll be touring North America through March 26, ending in Mexico City.
