Molly Grace has done it again - last month, the Nashville-based singer-songwriter released “F.E.M.M.E,” an infectious queer pop anthem that explores the difficulties and complexities of being a feminine lesbian. From verse to verse , Grace's lyrics take the listener through several semi-fictionalized interactions with straight men and other lesbians alike, examining society's rigid expectations when it comes to sexuality and gender expression, and how they can lead to femmes feeling caught in the middle. “I don't understand why everyone's so mad at me..." Grace writes, "I'm sorry I'm not sorry that I don't fit your fantasy.”

As the song progresses, these initial feelings of dismay and frustration move towards something positive and uplifting. Reflecting on her own experiences, Grace uses the song's lyrics to encourage listeners to stop conforming to others' expectations and instead be their own unique, fabulous, enticing, magnetic and magical selves. In the bridge, she sings,

"It doesn't matter how you talk, how you dress... Don't have to prove a thing to any of them. You're a femme... It doesn't matter who or what, why, or when... If they don't get it, then just say it again. You're a femme.”

Even though society is pressuring Grace, standing as a symbol for all femme lesbians, here she confidently declares she will not apologize for who she is. This sentiment is echoed in the song's artwork, made to resemble that of the film "But I'm a Cheerleader," where Grace is shown in all her bold, bright pink, femme glory, pom-poms and all.

Listeners can agree, this song is a bop not just because of its powerful message, but also because of its layered sound. From the first couple beats and Grace's captivating vocals, listeners are immediately drawn in and transported to another world. As the song continues, Grace skillfully layers different tonal elements and accents to create an immersive, vibrant song that’s sure to have people obsessed.

And, of course, one would be remiss not to acknowledge the songwriter's clever use of the "femme" acronym in her lyrics. Credited as being inspired by fellow pop icon Chappell Roan's "HOT TO GO!," Grace embraced the femme branding and established the beyond catchy combination of "Fabulous, Enticing, Magnetic, Magical, Everything." Put over a strong beat, you can't help but move your body to the music.

On Valentines Day, Molly Grace announced that her new album, “Mad at Her Forever” will be released on March 7th, and is available to pre save now. Her east coast “But I’m A Pop Star!” tour started in January and will run through April, so make sure to check if she’s playing in a city near you! Grace has also partnered with LIFEBEAT, a program part of the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, helping to fight for human rights and social justice among those affected by HIV and AIDS.

So the real question is... "Doesn't everyone want to be F.E.M.M.E.?"
