Nico Vega in NYC

BY MICHELLE SALGADO

Nico Vega has reemerged on the music scene and is once again spellbinding their audience, this time at Racket in New York City. Known for their electrifying presence and raw energy, the band is back with no-holds-barred performances and fresh music. Fans of the band may recognize a familiar face (and movie buffs may recognize him as well), founding member Michael Peña has rejoined the band, having left in 2007 to focus on his acting career. The band now consists of all four original members: Aja Volkman (vocals), Rich Koehler (guitar), Dan Epand (drums), and Michael Peña (bass).

With new music in the works, they’ve released two singles ahead of this tour. Both songs are bold and unapologetic, blending powerful lyrics that Aja has said draws from her much-publicized divorce. Despite the latest single, “Crazy Things We Do for Love,” only being released the week before the show, the audience sang along to every lyric - a sign of what’s to come for sure!

The band’s live performances have always been a spectacle, and their recent shows have been no exception. Each concert is a visceral experience, filled with high-octane energy that leaves you wanting more. Even their slower songs, like the dark folk “Fe Fi Fo Fum,” were dripping with an exciting intensity that had everyone in a trance. This time around, they brought along some friends to add a brass element to a few new songs, which added an exciting twist to their usual sound. As usual, the band closed out with the iconic “Beast” before encoring with an impromptu cover of “You Are My Sunshine” (with a ballerina-inspired dance break from Michael) leading into “Wooden Dolls.”

Nico Vega's return isn't just about nostalgia; it’s a bold statement of their evolution as artists. Their new work explores themes of resilience, defiance, and personal growth, reflecting the journey they’ve been on since their hiatus. This comeback is more than just a return to the stage; it’s a powerful resurgence that reaffirms their place in the music industry.
