Sarah and The Sundays Light Up Irving Plaza
BY KATELYN SANDVIK
It’s Friday night in New York City and outside of Irving Plaza there is an eager line of fans stretching past the block waiting to get into the venue. There’s a buzzing in the atmosphere as anticipation builds for the night. The artist they’re all here for: Sarah and The Sundays. The indie-rock band consists of Liam Yorgensen, Brendan Whyburn, Declan Chill, Quinn Lane, and Miles Reynolds. The band is currently on tour for their third studio album, “Like a Damn Dog,” and is playing shows across the United States.
Opening up the show was The Slaps and though their drummer was absent, they got the crowd energized and created an upbeat atmosphere. Then, at 9:00 the lights dimmed, as Sarah and The Sundays took the stage to the sound of roaring fans. They kicked off the show with, “Casanova,” one of the hits off their newest album, which had fans dancing and singing along.
It was clear that the night would be unforgettable as the band members bounced around stage, interacting with each other and the crowd - truly making the most of every moment. After checking in with the crowd, Yorgensen kicked off the next song, “Coward.” The band played songs from their three albums: “Like a Damn Dog,” “The Living End,” and “So You’re Mad About the Cups,” creating a perfect blend throughout their setlist.
They played fan favorites including, “Ruby Fields” and “Moving On;” everyone in the room seemed to lose themselves, immersed in the music. In those moments, it was almost as if time stood still and nothing else in the world existed as they played - an extremely powerful feeling. The band and audience were tied together in a shared journey, connected by the music. Towards the end of their set, they covered “Kids” by MGMT, but not without their own unique spin.
Closing the night with, “Vices” and “The Cue,” Sarah and The Sundays made live performing look effortless, and there’s no denying they left their mark on New York City. They are set to continue playing throughout the United States until May, so make sure to see if they’re playing a venue near you! There’s no doubt the rest of their tour will be just as electric. No matter if you’re a longtime or new fan, seeing Sarah and The Sundays live is an experience you won’t want to miss.
