The Darkness Lights Up Oxford’s New Theatre

BY LAUREN SKINNER

The Darkness lit up Oxford’s New Theatre on March 8, 2025, with a dazzling performance that reaffirmed their status as one of the most electrifying live acts in rock. Touring in support of their latest album, “Dreams On Toast,” the band delivered a high-energy set packed with new tracks and fan-favorite classics.

Opening the night was Ash, who set the stage with a lively and nostalgia-infused set, warming up the crowd with hits like “Girl From Mars” and “Burn Baby Burn.” By the time The Darkness took the stage, the audience was primed for an evening of pure rock ‘n’ roll excess.

Justin Hawkins, the charismatic frontman, strutted across the stage in his signature flamboyant attire, encouraging the audience to get out of their seats and join him at the front of the stage. The band kicked off with “Rock and Roll Party Cowboy,” before tearing through a mix of new material and beloved anthems. Highlights included the soaring “The Longest Kiss,” from their latest album, and the iconic “Love Is Only a Feeling,” which had the crowd swaying in unison.

Of course, no Darkness gig would be complete without “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” which sent the venue into a euphoric frenzy. The combination of Hawkins’ showmanship, Dan Hawkins’ blistering guitar work, and Rufus Taylor’s powerhouse drumming made for a flawless performance. By the encore, the crowd was buzzing, chanting for more. The Darkness delivered, closing with “Weekend in Rome” and “Love on the Rocks With No Ice,” which was unfortunately cut short due to the band breaking curfew.

With their signature blend of humour, theatrics, and face-melting rock, The Darkness proved once again that they are in a league of their own. A truly unforgettable night.
