The Genre-Pushing Artistry of The Voidz

BY NADINE GOETZ

Attending The Voidz’ show in London felt like entering another dimension. The experimental rock band consisting of Alex Carapetis (drums), Jeramy ‘Beardo’ Gritter (guitar), Amir Yaghmai (guitar), Jacob Bercovici (bass), Jeff Kite (keyboards), and The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas (vocals) played a sold-out show at the Troxy in London on March 8th, 2025. The venue was packed and fans eagerly awaited the band’s performance as they haven’t played in the UK since November of 2018 for the Virtue Tour, when they were promoting their second album. This time they came to London after releasing their latest album, “Like All Before You,” in September 2024.

London-based electronic trio Ebbb opened the show. The trio released their debut EP, “All At Once,” in 2024 and similar to The Voidz, their music isn’t tied to any genre boundaries. The band consists of Will Rowland (vocals), Scott MacDonald (drums), and Lev Ceylan (producer). The latter described the genre-defying EP of the band by saying how he likes that it can’t be pigeonholed, explaining how they love plot twists and exploding with something completely different.

Casablancas and the other members of The Voidz took the stage sometime after 9 pm. The band formed in 2013 after Julian’s solo tour in 2010 and seems to be Casablancas’ main musical focus now, as he has said in recent interviews that the band (The Voidz) is his passion project these days. Their experimental blend of electronic music, infused with rock and metal influences as well as heavy guitar solos, can feel like some sort of trip at times. When talking about the band in a 2018 Billboard interview, Casablancas said “The band name, The Voidz, is about exploring the unexplored. We’re all on this wavelength of trying to push the boundaries.” This can be heard clearly in their music which heavily pushes different genres, combining lots of elements, sounds, and vibes to create a unique sound. They blend almost futuristic elements with a rock and metal sound and, at times, Julian’s characteristic near-muffled vocals. In an Instagram post from 2023, the frontman described the band’s genre as “a mix of prison jazz, and heavier cyber sludge, goth 90s drum machines auto tune african vampire vibes indie rock alternative new wave 70s underground middle eastern punk.

Casablancas, performing with his sunglasses on throughout the night, didn’t seem to interact with the crowd a lot during the show but he was talking about a fight that had seemingly broken out sometime during the night by saying “we’re all gonna die anyway…just kidding” earning some laughs from the audience. Throughout the gig, there were plenty of mosh pits breaking out in the crowd, especially during heavier songs such as “Where No Eagles Fly.” The audience was very energetic throughout the night and the band was fantastic, clearly feeding off the crowd’s energy. The set was loud, chaotic, and exciting. The 17-song setlist included songs such as “Prophecy of the Dragon,” “ALieNNatioN,” “Square Wave,” “Did My Best” and even an improvised jam session which Casablancas referred to as ‘Time Machine’. Unfortunately, they left out the song “Human Sadness” from their 2014 released album, ‘Tyranny,’ which is a fan favorite. Just five days before the London gig the band released their new single “Blue Demon,” which they opened the show with. They ended their set with “Dare I Care” off of ‘Tyranny’, an instrumental-heavy track that was truly captivating to witness live.

The Voidz recently announced the release of a new EP coming out later this spring and they will be in the UK again later this year as part of IDLES’ Bristol Block Party on August 2nd. For those who missed The Voidz’ London show, this upcoming gig offers another chance to catch the band live in the UK this year. Anyone who is a fan of boundary-pushing music that blends unbridled rawness with an unpredictable mix of instrumentals, and finds beauty in the chaos, would love this band. With Julian Casablancas’ distinctive, almost drowned-out, vocals blending with the heavy guitar riffs and synth beats, their live shows are an experience that is not to be missed.
