From Arenas to Your Local Record Store: The Wombats’ Record Store Tour
BY KATIE HART
When you think of the indie rock band The Wombats, you might picture them performing at a massive arena, but their “Record Store Tour” is bringing fans a completely different experience. On February 15th, we were lucky enough to attend their intimate set at the famous Rough Trade East in London, where around 300 fans packed the venue for a stripped-down performance and record signing.
Coming out with only two guitars and a keyboard, the trio took the stage to an attentive and eager audience. From the moment they started playing, it was clear that this was a different type of show for the band — it felt raw and special. Lead singer Matthew Murphy kept the crowd engaged with more than just music by sharing stories about life on tour; he told tales of budget hotel stays and chaotic road trips that gave the night a campfire story-like feel, making fans feel like old friends rather than just an audience.
The setlist focused on their latest album, “Oh! The Ocean,” which was released just the day before. Despite how fresh the songs were, much of the crowd had already memorized the lyrics, singing along as if these tracks had been part of the band’s repertoire for years. Of course, The Wombats didn’t disappoint longtime fans — they made sure to include some of their biggest hits, sending the crowd into a blissed-out singalong with “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” and “Greek Tragedy.” The atmosphere was one of pure joy, with fans swaying and dancing together, shouting lyrics, and feeding off the band’s relaxed, joyful energy.
From a photographer’s perspective, this was one of the most unique concerts I’ve ever captured. Unlike a typical arena show where energy is at its peak and music is extremely loud, every moment felt festive and lively while simultaneously remaining close and personal. I thoroughly enjoyed the chemistry between the band and their fans, which made it easy to capture the magic.
If The Wombats' Record Store Tour is coming anywhere near you, make sure to grab a ticket before it sells out! These stripped-down shows offer a rare chance to see the band in a whole new light, and trust me, you won’t want to miss it!
