Wallows’ Model Tour Stops in Philly

BY KATELYN SANDVIK

On August 24th, The Mann Center (an amphitheater-style venue in Philadelphia) welcomed Los Angeles indie band, Wallows, who are currently touring their fourth album, Model. The show called fans from across the east coast, who brought the all energy and warmth necessary to make it an unforgettable night.

The show opened with Benee, a New Zealand-based singer songwriter. With her charming indie pop sound, she was able to get the crowd hyped and excited for the night ahead. Her set consisted of songs from her two full-length albums, “Hey u x” and “Lychee”, as well as from her many EP’s. Benee has been opening for the Wallows and she will continue to do so throughout the United States leg of the Model Tour.

Anticipation for Wallows grew until 8:40 when they were welcomed onto stage with roars of applause. Their first song of the evening, “Do Not Wait,” reverberated through The Mann as the band played behind a blue drape that illuminated their silhouettes. Finally, when the song came to an end, Wallows made their official appearance to the delight of thousands of adoring fans. Throughout the night, Wallows played a variety of songs from their discography with a focus, of course, on their most recent release, Model. Fans also got the joy of hearing some of the band’s classic songs from “Nothing Happens,” which just celebrated its 5 year anniversary, as well as fan-favorite singles like “Pleaser” and “Quarterback”. The trio of Dylan Minnette (vocals and guitar), Braeden Lemasters (bass guitar) and Cole Preston (drums) gave the large venue an intimate vibe, stopping mid-set to say they were shocked by how many fans came to see them in Philadelphia.

Really cultivating the intimacy and connection between the audience and the band, the trio even moved to play three songs from a B Stage towards the end of the night. This moment allowed fans farther away to see them better and gave more people that ‘barricade experience’. With the nature of Wallows’ music, it’s easy for fans to get immersed in the world they create and their indie sound kept them grounded in the midst of over 10,000 fans. Without the bright lights of the stage, the band’s members became even more personable with their fans and it was clear that they truly wanted to give them an amazing show. As their tour continues, there is no doubt that future shows will be any less successful and memorable.
